Researcher, Poetess, Novelist and Prose writer, Professor Dr. Salma Shaheen is well known personality in the literary circle in Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and Iran. She is the Professor of Pashto literature at the University of Peshawar and is associated with prestigious Pashto Academy of the University, since 1978.
She did her doctorate in literature. The title of her thesis is "Modern Poem in Pashto Literature". She has published her dissertation in 2004, which is a source of knowledge and guidance for the research scholars, writers and students. Today she is considered as an authority on Pashto Folklore and poetry. Apart from her published Ph.D. dissertation, Dr. Salma Shaheen owns to her credit, thirty research publication written on all socials, cultural, traditional, linguistic issues in Journal of national reputes. Some of the research papers have won tremendous appreciation in the literary circles of the country in general and NWFP in particular.

Dr. Salma Shaheen has written fourteen valuable books on Pashto Literature, Culture and Traditions. In a very distinctive manner, she has highlighted the social and cultural issues which are faced by the people of the province. She has also suggested solution for the problems with out compromising, traditional values and religion.As a distinctive poet of Pashto, Dr. Salma Shaheen published three books of poetry, where she has demonstrated her unique style of poetry. Ravail, Nawai Sahar, Zah Hum Hagha Si Wara Way are the published poetry books.So far twelve (12) books have been written by Dr. Salma Shaheen in which research work on:

 Tapa (Vol.1, II);
Abasin Da Tarikh Pa Aina Ke
The Pakhto Tappa : Muasharati Au Saqafati Asar
Modern Poem in Pashto;

Being the first novelist from NWFP Dr. Salma Shaheen has written two novels so far; namely:

Ka Rana Shwa (1988)
Kani Ao Azghi (2001)

In recognition of her services, she was nominated member of a cultural delegation on visit to China. Deeply influenced by Chinese rich civilization, she wrote a book on her journey to China. The of the book is Dil Ore Ankein Chein May. In this book she discussed the friendly relationship, the secrete of the Economics and Social Success of Chinese people and has drown a lesson for the people of Pakistan.

Dr. Salma Shaheen has attended a large number of Seminars, Conferences and Workshops since 1978. She is the member of a number of Social Organizations and NGOs. Her struggle for the cause of poor, women and children is well known. In recognition of her services, she has been given, Abasin Arts Council Award (1982-83), Pakistan Academy of letters Hijra Award (1996), Abasin Arts Council Award (1998), Pashtoon Culture Association Award (1994).
